TAWAU: A motorcyclist died following a collision on Jalan Felda Umas 2, Merotai, Tawau, while police in Sandakan seized 12 motorcycles in a separate “Ops Samseng Jalanan” (Road Gang) operation.
On April 5 at around 12.30 pm, a 47-year-old foreign national was riding a Modenas Kriss with his 40-year-old wife as pillion passenger, heading home to Kampung Felda Umas 2 for lunch.
At the scene, a 27-year-old local man on a Honda Vario, coming from the opposite direction, allegedly lost control while attempting to avoid a speed bump and collided with the Modenas Kriss.
The Honda rider sustained serious injuries and was treated at Tawau Hospital. The Modenas Kriss rider also suffered severe injuries and was treated in the hospital’s Red Zone, but was pronounced dead at 5.30 pm. The pillion passenger was unharmed
Investigations revealed that the deceased was a foreigner without a valid driver’s license, and neither the rider nor the pillion passenger was wearing a helmet. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (reckless driving causing death).
Tawau OCPD ACP Jasmin Hussin urged motorists to drive carefully, slow down on damaged roads, and always wear helmets.
On April 4, the Sandakan District Police Traffic Enforcement Unit conducted a “Samseng Jalanan” operation targeting illegal motorcycle racing.
A 20-year-old local man was arrested, and one motorcycle was seized under Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987. Another 11 motorcycles were confiscated under Section 60 of the same Act, and 37 summonses were issued.
