LABUAN: The Labuan Wushu Association has once again achieved outstanding success at the 2026 Malaysia “Sanda King” Open Championship (Gan Kong Lee Cup). Competing against 15 teams nationwide, the Labuan team emerged to secure 6th place overall. The event attracted 201 athletes from across the country and was recently held in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan.
Labuan sent a team of five athletes, who delivered an impressive haul of 3 gold and 2 bronze medals. What makes this achievement even more inspiring is that all participating athletes were previously stateless, having persevered through adversity to shine on the competition stage.
Nur Jailin Binti Abdullah won gold in the Girls’ 12–14 (42 kg) category, Nur Fatimah Binti Abdullah won gold in the Women’s 18 (45 kg) category, Musimar Bin Abdullah won gold in the Men’s 18 (48 kg) category, Khatijah Binti Ubay won bronze in the Women’s 18 (48 kg) category, and Muhammad Amirul won bronze in the Boys’ 15–17 (52 kg) category.
This competition represents not only sporting excellence, but also a powerful journey of transformation. Among the five athletes, three have successfully obtained Malaysian citizenship. Team manager and Secretary General, Tan Chee Haw, shared that the journey has not been easy for these athletes, and their achievements today are the result of perseverance and strong belief.
“They are not only competing for medals, but also fighting for opportunities in life. Sports has given them direction and allowed them to see hope.”
He further noted that statelessness had previously limited their development, including access to education, competition eligibility, and future planning. However, through continuous effort and support from various parties, some athletes have now taken a crucial step forward.
Team coach and President, Grandmaster (Dr.) Alvin Cardall Chong, said: “Seeing them go from having no nationality to standing on the podium, and even successfully obtaining citizenship, is truly the most rewarding outcome.”
