SEMPORNA: A wooden homestay in Pangkalan Bay, here, was completely razed in a late-night fire on Saturday. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported in the incident.
The emergency call was received via the station hotline at 10.47 pm on August 15. A team of nine firefighters from the Semporna Fire and Rescue Station was immediately despatched to Homestay Razak, located about 11 kilometres from the station.
The fire engine arrived at the scene at 11.09 pm. Firefighting operations were successfully brought under control by 11.20 pm, and the operation concluded at 11.36 pm.
According to Operations Commander, PBK II Nazir Korong, the blaze involved a 20×20-foot wooden structure, which was 100% engulfed in flames. Firefighters conducted suppression efforts using a single 200-foot hose line with two jets, drawing water supply directly from the fire engine.
The district police also deployed eight personnel to the scene to assist in crowd control and ensure the safety of the surrounding area.
After confirming that no further hazards remained at the location, firefighters concluded their operation. The cause of the fire and the estimated value of losses are still under investigation. – James Leong
