TAWAU: A 19-year-old local male died after reportedly drowning in Sungai Tagal, Kampung Kijang, Merotai here on Monday.
The incident occurred about 9.30 a.m. when the victim, together with 12 friends, had gone to the river for a swim. According to initial reports, the victim was bathing in the river with six of his friends, while the remaining friends were nearby preparing food.
The situation turned perilous when the river current suddenly became swift and treacherous. While the victim and his six friends were in the water, all six managed to struggle to safety and reach the riverbank. The victim, however, was swept away and submerged before he could escape.
His friends immediately alerted the caretaker of Sungai Tagal, who rushed to the scene and dived into the river to search for the missing teen. The victim was eventually recovered but was found pale and unconscious.
He was rushed to the Merotai Besar Health Clinic for emergency treatment. However, after examination and resuscitation efforts by the attending doctor, the victim was pronounced dead.
The body was subsequently transferred to the Forensic Unit of Tawau Hospital for a post-mortem. A physical examination revealed no signs of criminal elements or suspicious injuries on the victim’s body.
Acting OCPD Superintendent Wilynton Enchana Watt, confirmed that the case has been classified as Sudden Death Report (SDR) and that further investigations are underway to complete the necessary documentation.
He also advised the public to always prioritise safety when engaging in recreational activities near rivers and to avoid taking unnecessary risks if they notice sudden changes or strong currents.
