KOTA KINABALU: The Federal Government must act early against haze and worsening air quality, National Consumer Foundation (NCF) Sabah chairman David Chan said.
He urged tighter air-quality monitoring when the Air Pollutant Index (API) reaches unhealthy levels.
Vulnerable groups — the elderly, children, students and people with respiratory conditions — need particular protection, he said.
“Public health and safety must come first. We should not wait until the situation turns serious before acting,” Chan said in a statement.
“The public must get clear, accurate and timely information on API readings and how to protect themselves.”
Haze is not only an environmental issue, he said. Prolonged exposure disrupts health, schooling, tourism, business and the economy.
Where transboundary pollution is involved, the Federal Government should strengthen cooperation with neighbours through ASEAN mechanisms to tackle root causes, including forest and peatland fires, and to seek long-term solutions.
“The haze should not command attention only when it worsens. Prevention, early monitoring and regional cooperation must advance together.
“Public health, safety and lives must always come first,” he said.
