Navy, Air Force strengthen joint maritime defence through exercise

SANDAKAN: The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN), through its Eastern Fleet Command and Region 2 Headquarters (MAWILLA 2), completed Exercise OSTEX East 2/26 from Sept 28 to Oct 6.
The exercise tested the Eastern Fleet’s readiness and skills in maritime operations. It also aimed to improve operational effectiveness in realistic conditions.
It had three phases: harbour, sea, and closing. Training took place in Malaysian Maritime Zone waters around Sabah, a strategic area for national sovereignty and maritime security.
Eight RMN ships took part: KD Selangor, KD Rencong, KD Sundang, KD Sri Johor, KD Ganas, KD Baung, KD Yu, and KD Sri Gaya. Four Fast Combat Boats (FCBs) also joined.
The exercise used Force Integration Training (FIT) to strengthen cooperation between the RMN and the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF). Air support included one AW139 helicopter from RMN Squadron 503, two HAWK aircraft from RMAF No. 6 Squadron, and one CN235 from RMAF No. 1 Squadron.
This joint participation improved interoperability, coordinated action, and common procedures between the two services. It also increased response speed to maritime threats and strengthened deterrence.
OSTEX East 2/26 also helped evaluate training effectiveness, identify capability gaps, and draw lessons for future improvements.
The RMN said the exercise reflects its continued commitment to keeping the fleet ready to defend national sovereignty. – James Leong
