SANDAKAN: Sandakan’s role as the custodian of both ecological treasure and living history took centre stage at Monday’s launch of the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) Entrance Foyer and Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre’s new facilities.
Sandakan Heritage Trail Founder and Chairman, Lai King Hang, alongside his team, seized the opportunity to present their vision to Datuk Jafry Hj Ariffin, State Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment.
The event highlighted Sandakan’s unique dual appeal. While globally recognised for its wildlife and nature, Sandakan is also the historical heart of Sabah, having served as the pre-war capital of British North Borneo.
The way forward lies in balancing tourism development with the preservation of its natural and cultural heritage. Maintaining the town’s original character is essential to creating a valuable, sustainable asset for future tourism.
This vision aligns with the accelerated transformation and revitalisation of Sandakan under the new leadership of Sandakan Municipal Council President, Walter Kenson, whose efforts over the past six months have resonated with the community’s aspirations.
“Sandakan Heritage Trail is among Sabah’s most popular heritage experiences and was recently recognized by the Malaysia Book of Records as the First Historical Tree Trail In Malaysia,” added Lai.
“Over its 23-year history, it has built a strong following and remains the only visible, free tourism product within Sandakan town, covering 10 heritage sites. It is a particular magnet for international visitors.”
The ceremony was also attended by Dato’ Shaharuddin bin Abu Sohot, Secretary General of MOTAC, Datuk Frederick Kugan, Chief Conservator of Forests and Dr. Wong Siew Tee, CEO and Founder of BSBCC.
The Sandakan Heritage Trail Committee was represented by Lily Aw, CK Teo, who is President of the Sandakan Tourism Association (STAN), and Dr. Arthur Chung, who is also Deputy Chief Conservator of Forests (Research and Development). – James Leong
