Sandakan forwarders seek delay of Speed Limit Devices for trucks

SANDAKAN: The Sandakan Forwarders Association has appealed to the government to delay the implementation of the requirement to install Speed Limit Devices (SLD) on commercial trucks in Sabah.
During a courtesy call to Member of Parliament Vivian Wong Shir Yee on Wednesday, association chairman Chong Thien Ming submitted a letter requesting a postponement of the ruling in Sabah.
Chong explained that the situation in West Malaysia differs greatly from that in Sabah. He pointed out that Sabah is still in the midst of major infrastructure development under the Pan Borneo Highway project, which is only expected to be completed in the coming years. Unlike Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah does not yet have a fully developed highway system.
He also highlighted the high cost of installing the SLD, which ranges from RM1,700 to RM2,000 per unit. Given the current economic climate, many transport operators are barely managing to sustain their businesses, and the added financial burden would significantly impact the industry. These concerns were among the key points raised in the association’s letter.
In addition, the association presented another letter requesting sponsorship for a computer unit to help improve and maintain its membership record system.
Chong further noted that he took the opportunity to discuss several issues related to Sandakan’s economy and other relevant matters during the meeting. – James Leong
