KIULU: Continuous heavy rain has caused a landslide along the main road between Tamparuli and Kiulu, rendering it impassable for road users.
This led to a temporary road closure at KM2.45 by the Tuaran Public Works Department (JKR) to carry out repair works.
Kiulu Assemblyman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai has inspected the situation and received updates.
He has urged JKR to promptly create a temporary access road to ease traffic movement.
“I understand the difficulties faced by Kiulu residents, and I hope the temporary access road will allow continuous traffic flow for office workers and school-going students,” he said.
The Assistant Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister also expressed concern that the incident could impact Kiulu’s tourism sector, an economic driver for the community.
“This road is crucial for tourists to access the eco-tourism spots in the area,” he added.
He said JKR and the contractors have assured that they would build a temporary access road.
He suggested regular meetings with the JKR Director and District Engineers to ensure follow-up actions on road maintenance.
“While I understand the challenges faced by JKR, as they are also dealing with similar problems elsewhere, I hope a solution can be found soon to ensure safety and smooth travel,” he said.
Joniston said he will monitor the progress of the repair works to ensure that all relevant parties carry out their responsibilities.
He had requested that more frequent monitoring be conducted along Kiulu’s main roads during an engagement session with JKR Tuaran.
“This is important so that early signs of landslides can be detected and prompt action can be taken to prevent worse incidents,” he added.
Meanwhile, he called on Kiulu residents to stay cautious when using alternative roads while waiting for the repair works to be fully completed.
The alternative routes available are Jalan KK-Kudat, Jalan Stesen TV Lawamandau, Jalan Bungoliu Logkou Timbok, Jalan Kiulu Logkou Lama, and Jalan Kiulu Lawamandau to reach Pekan Kiulu.
A representative from the Tuaran District Office was also present during the site visit.
