SANDAKAN: A total of 22 individuals, including nine children, were detained in an integrated operation against beggars and vagrants in the district on Thursday.
The operation was spearheaded by the Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) with support from district police, Immigration Department, Social Welfare Department, Civil Defence Force (APM) and the National Registration Department.
Of those detained, nine foreigners were handed over to the Immigration Department for further action, while the remaining individuals were placed under the care of the Social Welfare Department.
According to MPS, this operation is a continuous effort by the authorities to curb the issue of begging and vagrancy, particularly in the town centre, to ensure public well-being, safety, and the preservation of the city’s image.
MPS stated that similar operations will be conducted periodically to address the issue comprehensively and effectively through inter-agency cooperation. – James Leong
