SANDAKAN: The unique identity of Kampung Sim-Sim should be preserved and developed while safeguarding its historical significance as an integral part of the local community’s heritage, says Sandakan MP Vivian Wong Shir Yee.
Speaking at the launching of the 2026 National Day and Malaysia Day Madani Community Programme and the Kampung Sim-Sim Cheerful Hut Competition, held under the theme “Sabah Tanah Airku, Malaysia di Hatiku” at the village hall on Saturday, Vivian emphasised that community development extends beyond physical infrastructure.
“It must also ensure that historical values, cultural traditions, and the spirit of togetherness among residents are continuously nurtured,” she said.
Vivian noted that the hut competition was not merely about beautifying the village but also served as a platform to ignite patriotic fervour, creativity, cleanliness, and cooperation among residents.
“The participation of villagers in community activities like this proves that progress and the preservation of village identity can go hand in hand,” she added.
The competition was also seen as an initiative to encourage residents to brighten their surroundings while strengthening the spirit of mutual assistance, unity, and pride in Kampung Sim-Sim’s identity.
In a separate matter, Vivian urged that political differences be approached with greater maturity, with all parties working together to deliver the best services for the welfare and well-being of the people.
She also announced that a service centre has been opened at Lorong E in the Kampung Sim-Sim low-cost housing scheme, enabling residents to channel their concerns and seek assistance on local community issues.
In the Cheerful Hut Competition, Jambatan 14 and Jambatan 23 emerged as joint winners in Category A, while also taking the Eco-Friendly Hut award. Third, fourth, and fifth places went to Jambatan 11, Jambatan 8, and Jambatan 2 respectively.
In Category B, Lorong C clinched first place and also won the Eco-Friendly Hut category. Lorong H took second place, Lorong E came third, Yi Villa secured fourth, and Lorong D finished fifth.
The Madani Community Programme was organised in collaboration with the Sandakan Parliamentary Office, Sandakan Information Department, Tanjong Papat Community Development Unit, Sabah Green Light Association, and other participating parties. – James Leong
