Support for strategic devt of Sabah Railway as a multi-purpose economic catalyst

SANDAKAN: Former Tanjong Papat Assemblyman Datuk Frankie Poon Ming Fung has voiced his strong support for the proposed comprehensive study on the development of the Sabah State Railway, describing it as a timely and forward-looking initiative.
Poon was responding to a recent announcement by Sabah’s Deputy Chief Minister III regarding the preparation of a formal proposal for the rail study, which is expected to be submitted to the State Cabinet for approval.
“This initiative comes at a crucial time as Sabah continues to pursue sustainable and inclusive economic growth, strengthen regional connectivity, and uplift rural communities,” Poon said in a statement.
He also acknowledged the role of the Ministry of Industrial Development, Entrepreneurship and Transport, under the leadership of Datuk Ewon Benedick, in steering high-impact strategic initiatives such as rail development.
Poon urged the study to adopt a holistic, multi-functional approach that extends beyond conventional passenger transport.
Key proposed dimensions include:
Tourism enhancement – With strategic upgrades, Sabah’s scenic landscapes of rivers, rainforests, and cultural heritage sites could position the railway as a world-class scenic tourism product.
Agricultural logistics & rural support – Integration of cargo and cold-chain capabilities would enable efficient transport of fresh produce, reducing post-harvest wastage and improving farmers’ incomes.
Economic corridor development – Railway stations could evolve into commercial hubs for trade, tourism, and small enterprises, helping to reduce rural-urban disparities.
To ensure long-term viability, Poon recommended that the study include:
An integrated strategy combining passenger, tourism, and freight functions, phased upgrading of existing lines alongside targeted expansion, public-private partnerships, particularly in tourism and logistics, and a robust cost-benefit analysis for sustainable operations.
“With proper planning and execution, Sabah’s railway can become more than just a mode of transport — it can be a key driver of tourism, agriculture, and inclusive economic development,” Poon said.
He concluded by commending Ewon’s leadership and expressing optimism for the initiative’s successful advancement. – James Leong
