Two killed in road crashes, man injured in separate incident, quarters razed

SANDAKAN: A teacher and a policeman were killed in separate road accidents in Beluran and Kinabatangan on Thursday.
In Beluran, a 25-year-old female teacher died and three students were injured when a Toyota Hilux and a Perodua Aruz collided along Jalan Pamol Sapi Nangoh at 12.23 pm on Thursday.
The teacher and students from SK Sungai-Sungai were reportedly travelling to the Beluran Education Office for a Kem Literasi Jawi programme. The three students were taken to hospital for treatment, while four occupants of the Hilux sustained minor injuries.
In Kinabatangan, 29-year-old police constable Mathew Zulian anak Backly died after a police vehicle crashed at Kampung Lot M. He was returning to the district police headquarters from Sibuga Prison in Sandakan after escorting a detainee.
His two colleagues were also taken to Kinabatangan Hospital, where Mathew was pronounced dead at 4.53pm.
OCPD Supt Janeve Sindih said the policeman’s remains will be sent to Kuching, Sarawak, for funeral arrangements.
Meanwhile, a 44-year-old man was injured after being hit by a vehicle while crossing the road near Wisma Persekutuan, Mile 7, Jalan Labuk, Sandakan, on Wednesday. He sustained an injury to the back of his head and was taken to hospital for treatment.
In another incident on Oct 8, a fire destroyed a four-unit block of plantation workers’ quarters at Paris 3, Kinabatangan.
Firefighters travelled 55km to reach the scene and managed to prevent the fire from spreading to five nearby blocks. Seven firefighters and 10 estate emergency response personnel took part in the operation. No casualties were reported. – James Leong
