SANDAKAN: The festive spirit of the 2026 Chinese New Year celebration was in full swing at the Sandakan town centre with the organisation of the CNY Night Market along Jalan Dua.
The event’s launch and site visit on Saturday were graced by Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) president Walter Kenson as well as representatives from local Chinese associations.
Also present to enliven the evening were Member of Parliament for Sandakan Vivian Wong Shir Yee; the Chairman of the Sandakan Chinese Business Chamber Chia Hock Ak; and the Chairman of the United Chinese Community Association Datuk Edward Khoo Get Ngian. Their presence, alongside thousands of visitors, reflected strong support for this cultural event.
The large-scale Night Market saw an overwhelming response, attracting not only the local community but also tourists eager to experience the vibrant Chinese New Year celebrations in the city. Visitors were entertained with a variety of attractions, including stalls selling diverse goods, delicious traditional cuisines, and colourful lantern decorations that brightened the downtown night scene. Cultural performances, such as the lion dance, further added to the lively atmosphere throughout the event.
MPS extended its highest appreciation to all organisers, participating government and private agencies, traders, and the public who jointly contributed to the success of this programme. It is hoped that such events will continue to serve as a platform to strengthen racial unity, stimulate the local economy, and promote Sandakan as a unique and culturally rich tourist destination. – James Leong
