TAWAU: Police dealt with two separate incidents within 24 hours: a son’s violent outburst over RM5 for cigarettes, and a two-vehicle crash on Jalan Kuhara.
On May 13, around 7.00 pm, a 30-year-old unemployed man was arrested in Kampung Haji Matahir after threatening his family and damaging property.
According to OCPD ACP Jasmin Hussin, the man became enraged when his mother refused to give him RM5 for cigarettes—after already giving him RM2. He kicked furniture, threatened his family, and later grabbed a meat cleaver to damage a motorcycle’s handle.
Fearing for her safety, his mother fled and filed a report at Bombalai Police Station. The suspect was arrested at 8.30 pm the same day and the cleaver was seized.
The case is being investigated under Sections 506 (criminal intimidation) and 427 (mischief) of the Penal Code.
In an unrelated case, one woman suffered injuries in a two-vehicle collision at Jalan Kuhara about 9.15 am on May 14.
A 4WD driven by a 39-year-old man was heading from Tawau town towards Ria Height, while an MPV driven by a 46-year-old woman was coming from Kampung Sungai Imam at the time of accident.
On a straight stretch, the MPV suddenly lost control, skidded, and veered into the 4WD’s path. The impact trapped the woman in her vehicle; firefighters had to cut the door open to rescue her. She was taken to hospital. The 4WD driver was unharmed.
The case is being probed under Rule 10 of the Traffic Regulations 1959 (failing to control a vehicle), Jasmin said. – James Leong
