TAWAU: Police have arrested 14 male students, aged between 12 and 14, to assist investigations into a brawl involving a group of students at Taman Ambar playground, Jalan Kuhara, here.
OCPD ACP Rosdi Mat Jusoh said police received a report on the incident at about 6.00 pm on Oct 6.
He said officers from the District Criminal Investigation Division arrested the 14 students on Oct 7 following probe and efforts to identify those involved.
“Preliminary investigations found that the incident started with a misunderstanding between two students before escalating into a fight involving several others.
“A viral video of the incident also helped police identify the individuals involved and establish their respective roles,” he said.
Police also seized an iPhone 13 and a black bicycle believed to be linked to the case.
Rosdi said one of those arrested was a foreigner who failed to produce valid travel documents.
“Further investigations are being conducted under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
Police are continuing investigations to determine the involvement and role of each person arrested.
Police are also obtaining the original video recording, recording statements from witnesses and those arrested, obtaining the victim’s medical report and working with the school and the Tawau District Education Office.
Police urged anyone who witnessed the incident or has information to contact investigating officer Inspector Robiatul Adawiyah Japri at 016-918 9402 or visit the nearest police station.
Rosdi also warned that rioting, assaulting others or using any object as a weapon are serious offences and firm action will be taken against those found to be involved.
Parents and guardians have been urged to monitor their children’s behaviour and social circles, while students have been advised to avoid fights, provocation and groups that could lead to criminal activities. – James Leong
