LAHAD DATU: A fire broke out at a concrete culvert processing plant in Segama, here on Wednesday, causing extensive damage to heavy machinery and a structure.
Two male workers suffered burn injuries in the incident. The Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call at 3.49 pm on August 12 regarding the blaze at the factory, located along Mile 5 Jalan Kg Kokos.
A team of six firefighters from the Lahad Datu fire station arrived at the scene at 3.58 pm, covering a distance of 24 kilometres.
According to Operations Commander, PBK I Mohd Akbar Mohambar, the fire involved a 30-ton lorry, which was 70% destroyed, and a forklift that was completely burned. The fire also slightly damaged a wooden structure within the factory compound.
Firefighters promptly initiated extinguishing operations using two hose reels drawing water from the fire engine.
Two male workers were confirmed to be involved in the incident. A 20-year-old man suffered 50% burns, while a 40-year-old man also sustained burn injuries. Both victims were rushed to the hospital by fellow workers before the firemen’s arrival.
The fire was brought under control at 4.09 pm and operation concluded at 4.50 pm after firefighters ensured there were no further hazards at the scene. – James Leong
