KOTA KINABALU: Borneo Rainforest Lodge (BRL), located in the Danum Valley Conservation Area in Lahad Datu, brought pride to Malaysia after winning the ASEAN Green Hotel Award at the ASEAN Tourism Forum 2026.
BRL was Malaysia’s candidate for the 10th ASEAN Green Hotel Award, hosted in Cebu, Philippines, on January 30, after meeting the requirements of the ASEAN Tourism Standards 2026–2027, said its chief executive officer Freddie Coleman.
The Yayasan Sabah subsidiary was represented by its chief financial officer, Esner Chong, who received the award on behalf of the lodge.
The nomination was endorsed by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac) following an assessment process that evaluated compliance with regional tourism standards, he said.
Freddie said the recognition reflects BRL’s long-standing commitment to sustainable tourism, rainforest conservation and community engagement.
The ASEAN Green Hotel Award recognises accommodation providers that demonstrate strong environmental management practices and sustainable operations.
He said the award places BRL among a select group of tourism establishments across Asean recognised for excellence in sustainability and environmental responsibility.
Freddie said the recognition also highlights sustained efforts by tourism stakeholders to raise standards across the region.
“Each recognition reflects a long-term commitment, consistently upheld standards, responsible decision-making and excellence in service,” he said.
He added that such efforts strengthen confidence in Asean as a competitive tourism region. – Wu Vuide
