District council members a bridge between government and people

TUARAN: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said district council members (DCMs) play an important role in supporting the implementation of the state’s development policies.
He said that DCMs act as agents to convey the people’s voice while carrying out government initiatives, particularly the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) Development Plan.
“DCMs must be more proactive in delivering services to the people.
“They should be equipped with knowledge and a clear understanding of their functions, roles, and responsibilities.
“This is crucial to ensure aid and development programmes are delivered to the people efficiently and transparently,” he said.
He said this at the swearing-in ceremony and presentation of appointment letters for the Tuaran DCMs for the 2025–2027 term, held at a resort here yesterday.
He stated that the success of the SMJ Development Plan relies on the commitment of all parties, including local authorities (PBTs) and DCMs.
DCMs must work hand in hand with the State Government to disseminate policy information, initiatives, and assistance to the grassroots level.
Hajiji also listed several ongoing and upcoming development initiatives in the Tuaran district, including the upgrading of basic infrastructure such as roads, water and electricity supply, tourism development, and the strengthening of local entrepreneurship.
“No matter how large the development allocation, it will be meaningless without efficient delivery.
“Council members must go to the ground, witness the people’s issues firsthand, and act with integrity, sincerity, and transparency,” he said.
He also called on all DCMs to serve as a bridge between the people and the government, bringing the people’s voices to the administrative level.
The latest appointments to the Tuaran District Council comprise individuals from various backgrounds, including former civil servants, business persons, youth leaders, and representatives from non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
They represent four State constituencies namely Sulaman, Pantai Dalit, Tamparuli, and Kiulu.
He said this diversity is viewed as a strength in formulating policies and addressing the needs of the people comprehensively.
“I am confident that with strong commitment and team spirit, the DCMs can carry out this trust for the advancement and well-being of the people of Tuaran,” he said.
