SANDAKAN: The driver of a Perodua Kancil was killed when his car crashed into a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) at the roadside near Mile 33 Jalan Beluran–Sandakan yesterday.
OCPD ACP Ahsmon Bajah said preliminary police investigation revealed that the 38-year-old foreigner was driving alone from the direction of Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan when the accident occurred at about 6.20 am.
On reaching the accident site, the victim swerved his car to avoid a yet to be identified oncoming vehicle which had entered his path while attempting to overtake another vehicle. Ahsmon said.
The victim’s car ended up smashing into the stationery SUV at the road shoulder on the left side of the main route, he added.
Ahsmon said the victim died of serious injuries at the scene and his body was sent by police to the Duchess of Kent Hospital Forensic Unit for post-mortem.
“The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” Ahsmon said.
