SANDAKAN: The Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) has announced a reduction in monthly ‘Reserved’ parking fees from RM500 to RM300, effective 1 April 2025, following public complaints and appeals from local businesses.
The Uniform Provision Public Parking Places By-Laws 2023, enacted by the Ministry of Local Government and Housing (KKT&P), was gazetted on 25 January 2024, and officially enforced by local authorities from 1 April 2024. Under this law, Sandakan (MPS) was classified under Zone A, with the initial monthly “Reserved” parking fee set at RM500.
Residents and business operators in Sandakan expressed dissatisfaction with the high parking fees, particularly those with offices in the town centre and satellite commercial areas. Complaints were raised with Karamunting Assemblyman Datuk George Hiew Vun Zin, who then brought the issue to MPS for review.
The Sandakan Chinese Chamber of Commerce also submitted appeals on behalf of affected traders, urging MPS to reconsider the fee structure to ease financial burdens.
After thorough deliberation, MPS President Walther Kenson on Saturday announced the decision to reduce the monthly “Reserved” parking fee to RM300, citing the need to balance revenue generation with public affordability.
“The adjustment takes into account the concerns raised by the community and businesses. We believe this revised rate is fair and sustainable for all stakeholders,” he added.
The new rate will take effect on 1 April 2025, providing relief to motorists and businesses in Sandakan.
