TAWAU: A reckless attempt by two men to evade arrest—by ramming a police vehicle and crashing into several civilian cars—has gone viral on social media since Sunday. The incident occurred around 1.45 pm near the traffic lights at Batu 3, Jalan Apas.
According to Deputy OCPD Superintendent Champin Piuh, a team from the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division (BSJND) of Tawau District Police Headquarters was conducting Op Tapis when they spotted a suspicious Toyota Hilux.
Police attempted to block the suspects’ vehicle in the Batu 3 industrial area, but the suspects aggressively rammed the police car and collided with civilian vehicles, he said.
The suspects continued driving dangerously toward the Jalan Apas traffic lights, hitting more cars before being cornered and arrested, Champin said.
A police inspection uncovered two plastic packets containing crystalline substances believed to be syabu (5.13 grams, worth RM400). Both suspects comprising of a 25-year-old local man and an 18-year-old foreigner, were tested positive for Amphetamine and Methamphetamine, he added.
“The case is being investigated under Section 39A (1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Police are still tracking down possible accomplices,” Champin continued.
Champin emphasized police would not compromise with those endangering public safety, adding that, the public is urged not to protect drug dealers and to report suspicious activities via the Tawau District Police Headquarters at 089-772121, 24-hour hotline or VSP mobile app.
