SANDAKAN: The body of foreigner Obing Markum, reported missing while catching fish in the river near Taman Kenari housing area off Mile 7 Jalan Airport was recovered on Tuesday.
The fisherman, aged in his 30s, had set out to the location from his house in Kampung Batu Putih at 4.40 pm on Monday. Someone nearby saw a crocodile attacking his boat at 5.20 pm and related the info to the authorities.
The victim’s boat was found with bite marks suspected to be from the crocodile attack, raising concerns for his safety.
A search and rescue operation involving personnel from the Civil Defence Force (APM), fire and rescue station, district police, marine police, Wildlife Department and residents, was activated after the alarm was raised at 8.50 am on Tuesday.
The operation began at 11.21 am and members of the search team came across his remains at 2.14 pm about 1 Km from where his boat was found. The body was later handed to the police for further action. – James Leong
