SEMPORNA: The cops here reported two separate enforcement successes, involving a theft case and drug offences, as part of its ongoing efforts to maintain public safety and order in the district.
The police arrested a 27-year-old local man suspected of being involved in the theft of two (2) vehicle tyres and rims. The incident was reported on Jan 9 in vicinity of Inabah Kamal Mosque after the victim had finished performing Friday prayers.
According to OCPD Superintendent Tan Hiap Wah, the arrest was made by a team from the Criminal Investigation Division based on intelligence and information at 5.20 pm on Jan 27. The suspect confessed to the crime and led police to the location where the stolen items were stored.
“The case is being investigated under Section 379A (1) of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of imprisonment between one to seven years and a fine upon conviction,” Tan said.
In operations to combat drug crime, nine (9) individuals were convicted and sentenced to prison by the Semporna Magistrate’s Court for possessing the dangerous drug methamphetamine (syabu). The sentences were handed down by Magistrate Dayang Aidaku Amira Aminuddin.
All accused were charged under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. A summary of the convictions and sentences is as follows.
Hussin Sakkam (42) – 8 months imprisonment & referred to the Immigration Department; Santai Salah (44) – 14 months imprisonment; Hamudin Ahmad (33) – 6 months imprisonment; Azwan Kisme (29) – 17 months imprisonment; Sali Bitong (51) – 11 months imprisonment & referred to the Immigration Department; Mumul Ripaif (33) – 10 months imprisonment & referred to the Immigration Department; Akhtar Mohd Salleh (29) – 10 months imprisonment & referred to the Immigration Department; Saniboy Juntikam (30) – 10 months imprisonment & referred to the Immigration Department; Mohamad Ismail (31) – 8 months imprisonment & referred to the Immigration Department.
The prosecution was handled by Inspector Muhammad Nur Faez Hazreeq bin Abdullah, while all the accused were unrepresented by legal counsel.
Superintendent Tan Hiap Wah stressed the police’s commitment to showing zero tolerance towards any form of crime, be it theft or drugs. He reminded the public to promptly report any information related to criminal activities to the police to enable decisive action to be taken in ensuring public safety. – James Leong
