SANDAKAN: The deteriorating condition of cracked roads along the access route to Pak Lee Building in Mile 1 Jalan Utara is raising serious public safety concerns. This was highlighted by Elopura Assemblyman Calvin Chong, following a follow-up site inspection on Wednesday.
According to Chong, complaints regarding the damage have been received three times from local residents. The latest survey found that the cracks at the building’s intersection are not only becoming more pronounced and widening but also have the potential to spread to other structures.
“This situation poses a high safety risk as it could affect the overall stability of the entire building if not addressed immediately,” he stated in a press release.
More worryingly, previous repair works have proven to be unsustainable. Observations on-site revealed that the cement wall at the foundation has sustained further damage. Significant signs of soil erosion around the area are also causing the structural support to weaken further.
Chong is urging the Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) to intervene immediately. He requests that the local authorities conduct a more detailed technical assessment and carry out comprehensive, high-quality repair works.
“A long-term approach is necessary, including strengthening the foundational structure and comprehensively addressing the issue of soil erosion. Public safety is the priority and cannot be compromised. Swift and effective action is essential to prevent any untoward incidents,” he emphasized.
He also assured that he would monitor the developments of this issue from time to time and hopes the relevant parties will take appropriate action until the problem is fully resolved. – James Leong
