Importance of lifesaving training and community sport

KENINGAU: A recent incident involving a pickleball player collapsing has highlighted the importance of lifesaving training and community sport.
As a result, JCI Keningau Baru organised the “Protect the Pulse: CPR/AED Introductory Workshop & Pickleball Game”.
The programme was held in collaboration with St John Ambulance Malaysia (Sabah) Kawasan Pedalaman and Picklehoods Keningau, with venue sponsorship from The Pickle Culture Club Keningau.
About 40 participants attended the event, most of them active pickleball players.
The initiative followed a recent local incident in which a pickleball player collapsed during a game and was successfully revived using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), highlighting the importance of immediate emergency response.
In response, the workshop focused on basic CPR and AED awareness through hands-on training conducted by St John Ambulance Malaysia (Sabah) Kawasan Pedalaman.
Participants particularly appreciated the practical session using lifelike mannequins, which provided realistic scenarios and helped build confidence in performing CPR.
The session was followed by friendly pickleball matches, strengthening community ties while promoting health awareness and active living.
Organising chairperson Nicole Lim said the incident highlighted the need for preparedness.
“It showed us that emergencies do not wait. We want more people to feel ready to act because, in those moments, anyone can make a difference,” she said.
JCI Keningau Baru expressed appreciation to St John Ambulance Malaysia (Sabah) Kawasan Pedalaman, Picklehoods Keningau, The Pickle Culture Club Keningau and all participants for contributing to the programme’s success.
The organisation remains committed to organising impactful initiatives that promote leadership, community service and public awareness on issues affecting community wellbeing. – Wu Vuide
