Indonesia-Sabah ties set for stronger economic cooperation

KOTA KINABALU: Indonesia plans to strengthen economic, trade and industrial cooperation with Sabah, including efforts to revive direct flights between Tawau and Tarakan, said Consul General of Indonesia in Kota Kinabalu Noorman Effendi.
The proposed Tawau-Tarakan route was currently the most feasible among several connectivity initiatives being explored, he said during Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day celebration at the Consulate General in Sembulan.
He said the route had operated before and could probably be reinstated next year, with Lion Air expected to provide the service.
Noorman said the Indonesian Ambassador to Malaysia Raden Mohammad Iman Hascarya Kusumo had met with Sabah Governor Tun Musa Haji Aman recently to discuss various matters, with relations between Indonesia and Sabah remaining strong.
“We will also continue our efforts to improve economic, trade and industrial cooperation,” he said.
He said the Ambassador had also pledged to bring a business delegation to Sabah, describing the move as a possible new beginning for bilateral economic ties.
Regarding the Independence Day celebration, he said it drew about 500 to 1,000 people despite being held on a working day.
“I see the enthusiasm of the Indonesian community who came. This is my first time celebrating Independence Day in Sabah, I think this is the biggest turnout I have seen compared during my time serving overseas,” he said.
The celebration featured a drum band performance by Indonesian children living in plantations, as well as silat, cultural performances, dances and food stalls.
Noorman said the event was intended to provide an opportunity for the Indonesian community in Sabah to come together and celebrate.
He also urged Indonesians in Sabah to take care of themselves, maintain their sense of nationalism and embrace diversity.
“As Indonesians, we have one philosophy: although we are different, we are one Indonesia,” he said.
On Indonesia’s new capital, Nusantara, Noorman said development was continuing, with the hospital also about to be established. Schools are already there.
Noorman said the development was expected to strengthen future economic links between Nusantara and Sabah, particularly in trade and investment.
