BELURAN: Two fires involving semi-concrete houses and shop premises were reported in the east coast within 24 hours, with one incident in Beluran destroying a house and another in Tawau destroying several houses, a rental building and shop lots. No casualties were reported in either incident.
In the first incident, at Kampung Matanggar, Beluran, on Sept 17, the Beluran Fire and Rescue Station (BBP Beluran) received an NG999 emergency call at 6.32 pm. A fire engine with six personnel arrived at the location about 7 km away, at 6.40 pm.
The fire involved a house, which was 100 per cent destroyed. Firefighting used two 300-foot lines with two jets, drawing water from a nearby pond. The fire was brought under control at 7.09 pm and the operation ended at 8.04 pm.
In the second incident, at Kampung Titingan, Tawau, on Sept 18, BBP Tawau received an NG999 call at 5.03 am. A fire engine arrived at 5.09 am, about 3 km from the scene. The operation involved 18 BBP Tawau firemen and 12 volunteers from the Titingan Community Fire Team, with assistance from policemen, 11 Civil Defence personnel and two Sabah Electricity personnel.
The fire destroyed two houses and a 21-unit semi-concrete rental house, all completely razed. Four shop lots were also destroyed, while firemen prevented the fire from engulfing 210 nearby houses.
The Tawau fire was brought under control at 5.59 am and the operation ended at 8.26 am. Both operations concluded only after firemen confirmed there were no remaining dangers at the scenes. No casualties were reported in either incident. – James Leong
