TAWAU: Two lorry drivers have been arrested to assist investigations after dashcam footage of dangerous driving on Jalan Apas, along the Semporna–Tawau route, went viral on social media.
Tawau OCPD ACP Rosdi Mat Jusoh said police had received a report over the viral Facebook recording, which showed two lorries believed to have been driven dangerously.
The incident is believed to have occurred on August 29 at about 3.52 pm, when an Isuzu lorry was travelling from Semporna to Tawau. Preliminary investigations indicate that another Isuzu lorry allegedly overtook several vehicles dangerously and nearly hit a motorcycle.
The footage went viral on social media on Sept 17, and a police report was lodged at 9.58 pm the same day.
Following the report, both lorry drivers were arrested on Sept 17 (Thursday) at about 11.10 pm to assist further investigations. Urine screening tests were conducted on both drivers and returned negative for drugs.
The case is being investigated under Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving.
Police are also working to identify the owner of the Facebook account that uploaded the footage to assist investigations.
The Tawau District Police view reckless and dangerous driving seriously, as it can threaten the lives and safety of other road users. All road users, especially heavy vehicle drivers, are advised to comply with traffic rules, practise courteous driving and avoid any action that could endanger others.
