LAHAD DATU: Fire and rescue personnel responded to two separate emergencies here on Wednesday—a house fire in Kampung Tabanak that injured a man, and an electrocution in Kampung Puyut.
At 10.32 am, the State Operations Centre and the Lahad Datu Fire and Rescue Station received an emergency call via the NG999 system about a fire at a wooden house in Kampung Tabanak, Jalan Hilir 2. A fire engine arrived at 10.38 am after travelling 6 km. Twelve personnel were deployed, led by Operations Commander PBK II Ag. Hazizan Hashim, with PKPgB Sumsoa bin Rashid as Senior Operations Commander.
Firefighting was carried out using an 800-foot hose line and two jets supplied from an open water source. The house was largely destroyed. A 40-year-old male tenant suffered burns and was taken to hospital by members of the public. His identification documents were also destroyed in the fire.
The fire was brought under control at 12.09 pm. After a final inspection confirmed there were no remaining ignition sources, the operation ended at 12.20 pm.
Later, at 12.47 pm, the Lahad Datu Fire and Rescue Station received an emergency call on its station line about an electrocution in Kampung Puyut, about six km away. A 12-member team arrived at 12.55 pm and found a lifeless body in the vicinity of the village. The victim, in his 30s, was confirmed dead at the scene by medical personnel.
The victim is believed to be a foreigner without identification documents, and villagers said he was not known to residents. Operations Commander PBK II Hazizan Hashim reported that after Sabah Electricity cut off the power supply, the victim’s body was recovered and handed over to police for further action, Lahad Datu Fire and Rescue Station chief Sumsoa Rashid said.
After confirming there was no further danger at the scene, the firemen concluded their operation at 1.36 pm. – James Leong
