SANDAKAN: Two separate incidents prompted police and emergency responses: a fatal hit-and-run in Sandakan and a vehicle fire in Beluran that also caused partial damage to a house.
In Sandakan, police are appealing for witnesses after an Indonesian man was killed in a hit-and-run. The victim was riding a motorcycle when he was believed to have been struck by an unidentified vehicle. The crash occurred at about 8.25 pm on Sept 20 along Jalan Sandakan–Lahad Datu near Kampung Segaliud, said OCPD ACP George Abd Rakman.
“The motorcycle was travelling from Mile 32 towards Kampung Segaliud. A medical assistant from Kinabatangan Hospital confirmed the rider died at the scene. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. Witnesses are urged to contact the investigating officer, Insp Mohamad Faiz, at 089-242222 ext 127,” George added.
In Beluran, a fire destroyed a four-wheel-drive (4WD) pickup and damaged a house at Kampung Desa Talisai. The Fire and Rescue Department received the emergency call through the NG999 system at 1.13 am on Sept 23. A six-member team from the Beluran Fire and Rescue Station was despatched to the scene, 39 KM away, and arrived at 2.16 am. The team found the 4WD had been completely burnt. The fire had already been extinguished by members of the public using buckets of water and a portable pump before firefighters arrived.
According to the caller, the vehicle had initially been under the house before catching fire and was later pushed out by residents. The blaze also caused about 20 percent damage to the house. No casualties were reported. Firefighters did not carry out firefighting operations, but inspected the scene to ensure it was safe. The operation ended at 2.40 am.
