SANDAKAN: Ramadan bazaars have seen notable improvements in food safety this year, with health officials recording just seven hygiene violations during enforcement operations from March 3 to 24 down from 14 in the same period last year.
District Health Officer Dr. Mohd Faiz Gahamat attributed the progress to increased awareness among food handlers, calling it a “positive shift” in responsibility.
“This is more than just a drop in numbers. It shows that our traders are becoming more responsible and taking food safety seriously,” said Dr Mohd Faiz on Tuesday.
He said the improvement reflected growing awareness among food operators on the importance of hygiene, especially during Ramadan when large crowds gather to break their fast at roadside stalls.
Dr. Mohd Faiz emphasized that early engagement combining education and enforcement helped drive compliance.
“When traders understand why rules matter, they follow them willingly,” he added.
Residents were urged to report suspicious or contaminated food to the Sandakan Health Office to prevent potential outbreaks. – James leong
