SANDAKAN: Member of Parliament Vivian Wong Shir Yee welcomed efforts to diversify sports activities at the Sandakan Sports Complex, particularly water recreation activities recently introduced by young local entrepreneurs.
Speaking after officiating the HR Aquasport water sports event, Vivian described the activity as a healthy way for visitors to spend time with family and friends while getting exercise through pedalling boats on the lake. The activity is run by a young married couple, Hazuezzah Hassan and Hafiz Jakiri, who aim to revive childhood memories of similar water sports once popular at the Jalil Alip Recreational Park.
Vivian also stressed the importance of ensuring visitor safety during such water activities to prevent any untoward incidents.
Regarding facilities at the complex, she expressed hope that the RM11 million allocation announced by former Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh for upgrading several sports facilities would be completed according to current needs. She added that a recent visit by Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Mordi Bimol is expected to have a positive impact on the complex’s facilities.
Vivian also highlighted the need for additional lighting at the complex, which is frequently used for jogging and walking by nearby residents, and urged visitors not to litter, especially around the lake, to keep the area clean and comfortable for everyone.
After the launch ceremony, Vivian tried the water activity herself, joined by orphans from the Al-Yakin Sandakan Orphanage who had been invited to the event. – James Leong
