SANDAKAN: Two separate incidents occurred within 24 hours: a fatal road crash in Sandakan and a fire destroying teachers’ quarters in Tongod.
A 31-year-old local man died after his motorcycle collided with a car at Mile 10, Jalan Sungai Batang, here at 4.40 am on Wednesday.
Sandakan OCPD ACP George Abd Rakman said investigations revealed the motorcyclist was heading from Batu 8 to Batu 12, while the Perodua Axia was travelling from Batu 12 to Batu 8. The car skidded into the opposite lane and crashed into the oncoming motorcycle.
The motorcyclist died at the scene, while the car driver sustained chest injuries and is receiving treatment at Duchess of Kent Hospital. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
In Tongod, a fire destroyed four teachers’ housing units, a school canteen, and a Proton Saga BLM at SK Imbak teachers’ quarters on Wednesday. No casualties were reported in the 6.20 pm incident.
Firefighters from Kinabatangan and Tongod volunteer fire unit arrived after traveling 167 km. The fire had already been fully extinguished by villagers using a water pump. The cause is suspected to be an electrical short circuit, and investigations are ongoing. – James Leong
