TAWAU: A local cargo boat suspected of being a ‘fuel runner’ was detained by Tawau Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in waters off here on the morning of February 3.
The boat was detected moving suspiciously from the direction of Tawau towards Sebatik Island before being intercepted approximately 0.8 nautical miles north of the Sungai Aji Kuning estuary.
According to Tawau MMEA director Kepten Maritim Ariffin Ghazali, an inspection uncovered 40 gallons of petrol, estimated at 1,200 litres, along with three filled LPG gas cylinders onboard. All of the fuel is believed to have been an attempt to smuggle the supplies out without a permit.
“The boat’s skipper, a 27-year-old local man, also failed to produce a valid boat registration license during the inspection,” Ariffin further disclosed.
The boat, its engine, and all cargo were seized for further investigation under the Control of Supplies Act 1961 and the Sabah Ports and Harbours Department Enactment 2002. The total value of the seizure is estimated about RM46,000. – James Leong
